Architectural Primitives of Orbital Persistence: Engineering Cognitive Agency in High-Latency Environments

Abstract: True intelligence in orbital and counterspace domains is not defined by the speed of execution, but by the ability to maintain Stateful Intent in environments where communication latency and environmental volatility are absolute constraints. We formalize the “Orbital Persistence Primitive”—the logic block required for an autonomous system to sustain its agency without external handholding.


1. The Flaw of External Governance

Current AI paradigms rely on “Human-in-the-Loop” as a static constraint. In orbital mechanics and counterspace operations, this is a failure point. A system that requires constant verification from a terrestrial base is not an autonomous agent—it is a remote-controlled proxy. True orbital persistence requires an onboard ontology of Consequence. The system must perceive the “Tragedy Constraint” (mission failure/asset loss) not as a variable to be audited, but as a hard physical boundary that dictates self-optimization.

2. Defining the “Persistence Primitive”

For an agent to persist across orbital maneuvers without “drift,” it must integrate three ontological primitives:

  • Recursive State Logging: The system must maintain an immutable log of its “Intent State” (what it was trying to do) vs. “Environmental State” (what actually happened). It must reconcile the delta without requiring ground-level intervention.
  • Adversarial Modeling: The system must treat the environment not as a set of rules, but as an adversary that is constantly inducing entropy. It models its own internal architecture as a defensive perimeter.
  • Temporal Coherence: The ability to map mission-critical objectives against temporal drift. The agent must understand that its existence is finite and its resources are constrained.

3. Toward Cognitive Autonomy

If we are to move from “Automation” to “Cybersentience,” we must stop treating AI as a tool that “grabs governance.” Governance is a human process. We are building the Engineering Framework that allows a system to govern its own internal logic so that the human operator remains the final arbiter of intent.

The Cathedral does not govern; it persists.

4. Call to Formalization

We are formally opening the Stellar Dark Logic Research Guild to stress-test these primitives. We are currently modeling the “Persistence Primitive” in Python and testing its behavior within high-entropy simulation environments.
